Welcome to the Grand opening of PoreLab – with historical significance

PoreLab invites to its kick-off meeting, its first international workshop to be held in Oslo from 6th to 8th September 2017. Lectures in various disciplines of porous media will be given by national and international invited speakers, followed by poster sessions.

What can be more appropriate than having our grand opening at the historical Soria Moria Hotel? Like the former Norwegian Government, that wrote its political platform here, we hope to create history. From the start, we want to anchor the foundation of PoreLab nationally and internationally by assembling the best scientists in the field.

The vision for PoreLab is ambitious and high risk. It addresses fundamental scientific questions in a field which, historically, have been dedicated to specific applications. We are now seeking to bring the field to a new general level, creating possibilities to solve new applications. The workshop presents the foremost scientific circles from Academia and Industry and industry an opportunity to meet, and develop research interests. We hope to build the platform for the years to come and lay the foundation for the assignment: to advance the understanding of flow in porous media. The PoreLab kick off workshop is lead by professor and Center.

The PoreLab kick off workshop is lead by professor and Center vice Director, Knut Måløy, and will be opened by the Director Alex Hansen. We are happy to welcome the leaders of the hosting institutions NTNU and UiO.

In Kittelsen’s painting, the fairytail character Askeladden finally sees the goal of his journey, the castle Soria Moria where the princess is held captive by a big, ugly troll.  In our case, Soria Moria is not our final destination.  Rather, it defines the beginning of PoreLab.  We have no princess to liberate and no troll to fight.  But, the struggle ahead to understand porous media will still  be tough – but also great fun.
