About the job
We have a vacancy for a PhD position in Soft Matter Physics at PoreLab, Department of Physics, NTNU. This PhD position is financed via the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Networks (MSCA-DN) FLUXIONIC. The candidate needs to fulfill the hiring policy of the MSCA-DN and will have to follow the programs doctoral training activities and fulfill the requirements of NTNU for obtaining a PhD. The appointment has a duration of 3 years. The PhD student should start no later than August 2024.
The position is organized at the Department of Physics in close collaboration with the Center of Excellence PoreLab
Duties of the position
In this experimental project the student will study the physics of phoretic flows of saline, aqueous solutions through nano-porous media. The focus of the research will be on developing micro-PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) to study the influence of nano-confinement on ion-transport, which is relevant in biological systems and in energy-storage. The experimental work will be carried out in close collaboration with Prof. Claire Chassagne from the Technical University (TU) Delft and the other members of FLUXIONIC.
The student will be required to write academic papers and submit them to international scientific journals, and participate as well in international scientific conferences. She/he will be required to complete the mandatory courses for the PhD, write a PhD thesis using academic papers as basis and defend the PhD when completed.
Required selection criteria
- You must have a professionally relevant background in physics.
- Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree programme, where 120 credits are obtained at master’s level
- You must have a strong academic background in physics, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
- Master students who expect to complete their studies by summer 2024 are encouraged to apply. Employment will then be postponed until the Master’s degree is finished but no later than August 2024.
- You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty’s doctoral program https://www.ntnu.edu/nv/phd
- Excellent written and oral English language skills
- Applicants must comply with the MSCA Doctoral Network eligibility criteria:
- Must be a doctoral candidate, i.e. not already in possession of a doctoral degree at the date of the recruitment.
- Mobility rule: The candidate can be of any nationality but must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant
Preferred selection criteria
- You should have an interest in experimental soft matter physics.
- Knowledge in computational physics and programming skills is recommended and will be needed for the project.
