Opening at the University of Oslo: Postdoctoral research fellowship in Computational Physics

The department of Physics at the University of Oslo has an opening for a postdoctoral position within computational physics –

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Computational Physics

Job description

We invite applications for a challenging postdoctoral position in Computational Physics, available at The Njord Center, University of Oslo.

The appointment is a fulltime position and is made for a period of up to four years (25 % of which is devoted to required duties, usually in the form of teaching at the Physics or Geoscience Departments or common activities for the Njord Center).

The main goal is numerical modelling of fluid flows at various scales with applications in the domains of porous media and geological processes. The objectives of this project are to model the complexity of single and multiphase flows in various porous solids, in the presence of evolving solid interfaces. The specific goal of the position is open and will depend on the candidate’s research statement that should be handled in with the application.

The candidate will be part of a lively research environment at the Njord Center, and will study numerically flows in the presence of interfaces and solids. The candidate will be at a strategic interface between laboratory activities that provide unique data and numerical modelling activities. The position includes collaboration between several groups at the University of Oslo: the section Physics of Geological Processes at the Geoscience Department (Profs. F. Renard and B. Jamtveit) and the Center of Excellence PoreLab at the Physics Institute (Prof. E. Flekkøy), both members of the Njord Center. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in international research networks. The position is jointly funded by Equinor through the Akademia Initiative at the University of Oslo and by the Center of Excellence PoreLab.

More about the position

Postdoctoral fellows who are appointed for a period of four years are expected to acquire basic pedagogical competency in the course of their fellowship period within the duty component of 25 %.

The main purpose of the fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.

Qualification requirements

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

  • Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in Physics. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Appointment is dependent on the public defence of the doctoral thesis being approved.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.

The position requires a strong background and interest in one or several of these topics:

  • Computational fluid dynamics
  • Statistical mechanics
  • Electrostatics and electrodynamics
  • Physics of interfaces
  • Teaching experience in physics and/or numerical methods

We offer

  • salary NOK 515 200 – 597 400 per annum depending on qualifications in position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow (position code 1352)
  • a professionally stimulating working environment
  • attractive welfare benefits and a generous pension agreement, in addition to Oslo’s family-friendly environment with its rich opportunities for culture and outdoor activities

How to apply

The application must include

  • Cover letter (statement of motivation, summarizing scientific work and research interest)
  • A short (1 page) research statement
  • CV (summarizing education, positions, pedagogical experience, administrative experience and other qualifying activity)
  • Copies of educational certificates, academic transcript of records and letters of recommendation
  • A complete list of publications and up to 5 academic works that the applicant wishes to be considered by the evaluation committee
  • Names and contact details of 2 references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail and telephone number)

The application with attachments must be delivered in our electronic recruiting system. Foreign applicants are advised to attach an explanation of their University’s grading system. Please note that all documents should be in English (or a Scandinavian language).

In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on the documented, academic qualifications (including publications, international conferences), the teaching experience, the quality of the research statement, as well as the candidates’ motivation, personal suitability, mobility experience and capacity to join interdisciplinary academic communities. Interviews with the best-qualified candidates will be arranged.

It is expected that the successful candidate will be able to complete the project in the course of the period of employment.

About the University of Oslo

The University of Oslo is Norway’s oldest and highest rated institution of research and education with 28 000 students and 7000 employees. Its broad range of academic disciplines and internationally esteemed research communities make UiO an important contributor to society.

Njord is a cross-disciplinary Geology-Physics center hosted by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Oslo. We focus on the fundamental physics of geological processes related to: transport and reactions in deformable porous media, fracturing and fragmentation processes, interface dynamics during geophysical flows, and intermittency and pattern formation in geological systems far from equilibrium. We conduct research on earth systems that range in scale from atoms to continents and apply methods where fieldwork, numerical modelling, experiments and theory act in concert.

The center includes the Oslo-branch of PoreLab, which is a Center of Excellence (CoE), and the former CoE, Physics of Geological Processes (PGP). There are 13 professors and associate professors at the center, in addition to doctoral research fellows, postdoctoral fellows, researchers and technical and administrative staff – in total about 65 persons.
